Hitchcock sets the stage for suspense with The Birds by introducing Daniels and Brenner, and their relationship, long before the action gets underway. The screenplay was created by popular writer Evan Hunter, better known by his name, Ed McBain, from a novella written by Daphne Du Maurier. Hitchcock used electronic sound effects instead of music to create a stunning effect. Hitchcock looked into a real-life event of a sooty attack on shearwater at Capitola, Calif. in 1961. It was believed to be aggressive as they had consumed poisoned anchovies with diatoms.
